Last night I made my way out to the UNDERGROUND CINEMA(home to WrestleCrisis)to catch Toronto After Darks premier of MONSTER BRAWL. The 7 o’ clock show sold out in three days so they added a second showing which was still well attended.
Before the movie the director Jesse T. Cook offered the Monster Brawl title to the man who put T.A.D together. One of the actors and local wrestler/YTV personality R.J Skinner/City seemed offended by this and went on to cut a promo as to why he’s the star of the movie and should have the belt. This lead to a rock version of REAL AMERICAN playing and Jimmy Hart and Robert Mailet(formerly WWE’s Kurrgan)coming out and giving the belt back to the rightful person after a RJ got choked by the former 300 Oddity who he starred in the movie with.
The movie had a warm up attraction in the form of a short musical called LEGEND OF BEAVER DAM. This little movie had it all music,violence,monsters,people on fire all in a neat little package. Kids sometimes can make or break a movie with their acting and this one was definitely well done with well directed kids stealing the show.
The main(maim?) event came next MONSTER BRAWL!!! A monster movie kumite of sorts. Complete with UFC ref Herb Dean and Art Hindle an x undead champion and Dave Foley doing his best Howard Cosell(sp?) impression. Other b celebs featured were Jimmy Hart,Kevin Nash and the voice of Lance Henrikson. Some Ontario wrestlers were involved as well stealing their scenes most of the time. I thought this movie was 3/5. It had continuity errors that annoyed more often than not(how is their an x champ who’s an old man yet the owners a kid starting out? etc.) bad edits from scene to scene only once with a MB logo that would’ve made sense the whole time. A B story with a likable female or a storyline about the ring girls could have been interesting as well if done well to add more to the drama/sex appeal. The finish wasn’t as satisfying either I sat through an hour and a half that felt like just over 2 hours for no real finish..I deserve more lol.
The seemingly mandatory cameos seemed unneeded and phoned in especially Kevin Nashs Zombie(not “Zombie man”)which barely seemed like a zombie at all. I can understand him being a “stage one” zombie but come on now.
I liked RJ Citys performance the most out of the movie. His vignette to set up his beef with monsters was the best part of storytelling and was the only really engaging character. Whereas most were just wacky or predictable he brought life to what could have been a stale cliche. The scene where he puts on his boots and gets ready for war was an example of making a connection with what could have been cliche. I heard he had some input into his role,I wondered how much he brought to the table and what they had initially had in store for him.
The Witch Bitch and Lady Vampire were both well played and entertaining as well. With her midget manager I was pulling for Witch Bitch early due to her facials alone. I thought the winners of their matches were supposed to fight as well but instead their characters just disappeared which sucks. Both for continuity and for the lack of Lady Vampire who won me over as well with her match and vignette. The wrestlers really brought their craft to this flick in a big way. They all seemed more natural and “on” than any of the other people named on the poster(minus Kurrgan). Maybe they just understood how to give what was needed for their roles more than the others being this was a wrestling movie.
All in all I was entertained but wanted more gore,something to shock me,more continuity and more atmosphere that only seemed to be in the woods scenes with RJ. I like b movies and wrestling but I expected more maybe a Jimmy Hart slashing leading to a human stalker chasing the ring girls leading to him in a all out rumble with all the zombies and contenders. Leading to a deranged human champ or something a little less paint by numbers I guess. I liked the effort camp and some of the jokes in this but it wasn’t the calibre I expect from the great Dave Foley or a b movie I would rent while high lol.
